Pre 1990 the British garment manufacturing industry was thriving A lot of wool and knitwear was produced in Leicester and Scotland.
Due to the recession and demand fast fashion, consumers wanted cheaper products and to feed the fast fashion trend and compete with other businesses companies started soucing their ptoducts in China it became cheaper to manufacture in China.

Labour and shipping costs are now rising in china so British manufacturing is starting to improve . Consumers are now aware of sustainability issues and are buying more British products even if it means paying that little bit extra.
